The Eagles' trip to The White House has been cancelled -- by President Donald Trump. In a statement released late Monday evening by The White House, President Trump stated that the Eagles were no longer welcome on Tuesday for their planned visit due to the fact that the entire team was not going to come."They disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country," the statement said."These fans are still invited to the White House to be part of a different type of ceremony -- one that will honor our great country, pay tribute to the heroes who fight to protect it, and loudly and proudly play the National Anthem," the statement continued. The Eagles have yet to release a statement regarding the now-cancelled visit. But it was no secret that many Eagles are not fans of the President because of his stand on the national anthem protests.Last month, the NFL announced its new national anthem policy. All team and league personnel, including players, who are on the field for the pregame will be required to stand and "show respect" for the flag and the anthem under terms of the policy. But it no longer is required that all players on the field for the anthem, meaning players who wish to protest can stay inside the locker room or off the field. The protests typically are meant to bring awareness to social injustices and/or police brutality. The NFL can fine teams -- not individuals -- whose personnel violate the policy, but the teams have the authority to develop their own set of rules within the framework of the NFL policy.Essentially, the policy eliminates the ability for players to kneel during the national anthem. It is unclear if standing put raising a fist -- as some players have chosen to do -- and other less noticeable signs of protest will be considered respectful or disrespectful under the policy.News of the cancelled event sent off a firestorm through Twitter, with everyone reacting to President Trump's decision. Here is a look at some of the responses:
I'm proud of what the @Eagles accomplished this year. I'm skipping this political stunt at the White House and just invited the Eagles to Congress. @Eagles How about a tour of the Capitol? https://t.co/niWR7zkSYx
